Dave Blackwell

Welcome back to my author interview blog.

Now this week we have the wonderful mind of Dave Blackwell with us. Now Dave and I have chatted a fair bit, and this is a man who is filled to the brim with ideas. Every time we have stopped to chat he is in the middle of developing something new or setting aside ideas for the future. A fun little fact about him is a good bit of his ideas actually stem from his dreams, which he has a journal where he puts them down in.

Clearly the man is a creative well and no doubt it translates beautifully into his craft.

Speaking of which, let's get down into it shall we?

---
1) How long have you been a writer?

I started writing at the age of 13.  Poems, plays and short stories.  Some of my work was used in plays when I attended Drama School.

2) What got you into writing?

I was a huge Stephen King and James Herbert fan and loved the idea of putting my ideas to print.

3) What’s your favorite genre of writing?

I would have to say Horror, however I am taken in with Sci Fi at the moment with a couple of project ideas.

4) Do you have any work already published? If not do you want to include a snippet of what you’re currently working on?

I published my first book in December 2017, a story of abuse, bullying, depression and loss.  The story is based on personal experiences.

5) What’s your WIP about?

I started on my Science Fiction project 'Stratagem'  A story about a man that has a mundane job, and starts to experience deja vu.  His colleagues and friends start to act strange towards him.  He is involved in an accident, which left him severely injured.  However his injuries disappear and the world around him begins to change.

6) Who is your favorite character to write so far? And why?

An Italian girl called Amara, she is the love interest of the main character and also the reason the world is falling apart around him.  She plays a huge role in the story, has a large back story herself.

                   Victoria Trenton

Victoria has rocked the world with her debut novel, 'The OutMate', or maybe it's just mine that she's managed to ensnare with the sordid tale of danger, lust, and self discovery. Her main character is a daring woman with her own gritty past that finds herself completely undone and remade by Nick Jessup. A man that is almost tailor made to most every women's dark fantasy.

What's refreshing for me with this is the fresh take that comes with this bad boy romance, and that lies in the fact that this is an honest love. This isn't someone coming into a relationship to change the other, but the raw emotions that comes from completely losing oneself into someone else's world--even if their world is less than ideal. And it takes you on a journey of having yourself completely remade as our star manages to stumble and fall through this epic tale.

It's a sense of realness that will leave you dizzy every time you have to set it down.

So I think it's about time we get to meet the outstanding author behind the words.
-----
1) How long have you been a writer?

I've been writing since I was a little girl. Mind you, my original work was really horrific, and it was mostly about unicorns, elves, and other mythical creatures, but I was lucky enough to have a mother who saw past my less than stellar beginnings to what my writing would become over time. So many young artists of all kinds endure ridicule for early attempts that poison them forever towards developing their own style and squash their inner talent. My childhood was not like that. Dream, my mother told me, and put it all on paper. Boy, did I ever.

2) What got you into writing?

It was more that writing got into me. I have never been one to take a lot of credit for the actual writing. I work hard, I pay attention, and I have a ridiculous imagination, but the real inspiration for my work comes from somewhere else. I call it the Muse but it's a loose term to cover what I really conceive as some kind of huge sentient being who somehow gets inside me and pours out stories that left to my own devices, I cannot imagine I'd have the talent to unfold.

3) What's your favorite genre of writing?

Erotic Crime Thrillers. I like exploring the darker side of humanity in all its glory/gory, which I guess comes from two places- being the woman of a career criminal for eight years, and from my own deeply erotic, dark side. When you can take really disturbing life truths and not only find beauty and eroticism in them, you also make your readers feel them, you know you hit a live vein. We all have a dark side. Some of us are just more open to explore it.

4) Do you have any work already published? If not do you want to include a snippet of what you're currently working on?

I have two novels published, the first two volumes of The Outmate Trilogy. Book I is The Outmate, which is the story of a young woman discovering the darkness within herself through the overwhelming influence of her violent criminal lover, and the sequel, volume two, The Mastermind, which continues the dark and deviant journey of the twisted, sexy pair. The third and final volume of The Trilogy, The Sea Wolf, is due to come out Fall of 2018.

5) What's your WIP about?

The Sea Wolf is the third book of The Outmate Trilogy, and what I'm working on presently for release this Fall. I'm in the piecing together stage of that novel, in that I write all my pivotal scenes first, and then piece them together so the whole plot flows. Miraculously I rarely have to rip up plots and rework them- as I said my Muse knows what it's on about before it takes control of my fingers and therefore all I have to do is let it flow at will. A good example of this are books four and five, Dead Ends, and The Wolf Girl, which I began writing a year ago only to realize that they loosely tie into The Trilogy as well, and many of the important characters intersect. My books are full of hidden jokes, interrelations, and overlapping plots. My Muse has a whole universe out there much like Sin City, written by the incredible Frank Miller.

6) Who is your favorite character to write so far? And why?

Nick Jessup is by far the best character I've ever written. He's complex, frightening, brilliant, sexy, and to put it bluntly you won't always like the man. He can snap at a moment's notice and wreak some horrific, bloody violence on everyone around him. But when it comes right down to bare bones, Nick Jessup inspires a grudging respect, love, and empathy (not to mention lust) from readers simply because underneath all that bravado lies a very damaged, wounded soul. Nick was based on my ex-fiancé who is still one of my closest friends, and the character mirrors the real man very closely. Writing The Sea Wolf, which is Nick Jessup's final appearance in my writing, is bittersweet and painful at times because he is the nearest and dearest of my characters to my heart, damn his ferocious, sarcastic and dangerous soul. But I'll give away a little secret… Nick has a son, Kai. Let Freud make of that what he will.
----
Okay, so I'm a little frazzled at that secret at the end! I haven't even gotten to the second book yet.

But in all seriousness, you should definitely check out her books. Both of which are on amazon and don't forget to give her Facebook page a like to keep up with any new updates she has in store.

You'll find yourself as smitten with Nick as I have become, all while falling for the colorful and beautiful surrounding cast Victoria has created. This is seriously a story unlike any other I have come across and I promise you, you won't regret it.

Wendy Collet

Now this is an author who has a way with hot romance. I'm talking, seat gripping, head reeling, romance. I have had the pleasure of reading her debut novel, ' The Mate's Ring.' A short, but loveable story about falling in love when you least expect it. (Not to mention the dangers that come from loving a powerful Alpha!)
Now, for those who don't know me. I am not someone who hangs onto romance. It's rare for me to enjoy a novel dipped in it. But let me tell you, Wendy Collet managed to create absolutely stunning characters; rich and vibrant against the page. And her gripping mastery surrounding those intimate scenes had even my heart racing.

But that's enough from me. Lets hear from the author herself.

1) How long have you been a writer?

I published my first book in September, but I have been writing for six years.  I had a non-fiction short story published by my college in 2012.

2) What got you into writing?

I have wanted to be an author since I was in the 5th grade (many, many years ago…lol).  Six years ago, I was inspired by one of my favorite authors to actually put pen to paper. Life got in the way of finishing that book, until this year.  My intentions were to write my book for myself, but I had two very special friends talk me into publishing my book.  I decided to make my dream come true and I wanted to have people read my book and love it.

3) What’s your favorite genre of writing?

My favorite genre is paranormal romance.  I love me a sexy Alpha.

4) Do you have any work already published? If not do you want to include a snippet of what you’re currently working on?

I have one book published, The Mate’s Ring.

5) What’s your WIP about?

My WIP is the 2nd book to my first, tentatively titled, Connor.  I have a couple other books that I have started, but this is the book that is talking to me.

6) Who is your favorite character to write so far? And why?

My favorite character is in my current WIP, Connor.  He’s a strong, passionate character that has always been distant when it came to others.

I don't know about you, but I am certainly eagerly awaiting her next book's release. But in the meantime as we wait, be sure to check out her Author's Page.

And for those interesting in diving into her first novel, you can find it right here.

Ira Robinson

Meet the man, the myth and the legend that has become Ira Robinson. This is a man not easily subdued by strife. Pulling himself up from considerable set backs he is by far one who should hold his head up high, as his achievements are anything but small.

Let's get to meet this amazing author and get a glimpse into the mind who gave us books such as 'Silent Steps', 'Penitence', and 'The Eternals Game'.

1.) How long have you been writing?

I actually started writing when I was about 8 years old, though only sporadically.  I was just finding my roots and footing in the world, and there I was trying to create new ones.  I stopped when I was about 12, and then picked it up again at 19 years of age.

I stopped again in my late twenties.  My (now ex-) wife decided it would be a good thing for me to forget about writing, and burned all of my stories in a fire.  Another incident a few years later with another person led me to give it up for a while. it broke my confidence, to say the least.

About 4 years ago, I began to write again, and have not stopped since.

2.) What got you into writing?

I always loved reading and picked up on "big people books" at a very early age.  I wanted to emulate what I saw, and my imagination was pretty wild.  Had to get those "voices" out, somehow.

When I started writing again later, it was primarily as a way for me to get out a lot of emotional things I had going on.  It was a catharsis for me.  I still wanted to draw people into the stories I was creating, but at that point, it was much more for me than anyone else.

3.) What's your favorite genre of writing?

A big question, actually.

I like to write blended genres most of the time.  Speculative fiction would be the best category I would put myself into since I write stories about fantasy worlds with science fiction elements, psychological horror with fantasy elements, and that sort of thing.

When I was younger, I tried to stick much more into the traditional roots of a genre, but since then, I have let my own inner wild go.

4.) Do you have any work currently published?

In fact, I do.

I currently have 8 books on the market.

4 of them are non-fiction books and involve different topics.

Two of those are a little dated, written years ago, give different methods to make money, both from a business standpoint and as an individual.

One, "When Good Relationships Go Bad" is a self-help book which seeks to help people enable themselves to break out of the cycle of bad relationships they get into and move forward into a more controlled life.  It's helped quite a few people, from the responses I have received on it.

The last is "Haunted: Finding an Explanation for the Unknown."  This is a book about the paranormal, including an in-depth history of it going all the way back to pre-history days and is sort of a go-to book for everything about hauntings.

In the fiction realm, I have 4 books published or being published soon.

"Silent Steps" is a science fantasy story and the first of a trilogy.  The second book, "Voices Carry" is due out in the next two months.  These tell the story of a young girl, Aylen, who is unable to speak normally.  She is told she is to be the "voice of her Goddess" by her Goddess, herself, and is caught in a destiny to rid her planet of the alien invaders that have enslaved her people for a thousand years.

"Penitence" is a psychological horror story about a woman named Christa, trapped by a person she thought she loved in a horrible circumstance.  The book has a little bit of everything, including true love, obsession, demonic possession, and redemption.

Finally, "The Eternals Game" is due out within the next three months.  This is the story of a man with a problem.  He's caught in the center of a game being played between eternal beings vying for control of the universe, and he does not want to be.  To top it all, the only person who knows the full truth is the ghost of his dead sister who haunts him.

5.) What is your current WIP?

The Black Rose Files is an ongoing series in episodic form, about a sleepy little town named Tanglewood.

Located in the remote areas of Louisiana, Tanglewood is a town shrouded in mystery, where the paranormal is normal and the weird comes to live.

See that building over there? That's Tangled Treats Bakery.  Elizabeth Barlowe runs the place.  She's been through some tough times since her husband left her to raise her daughter alone.  When her daughter comes up missing, the chaos that comes to her life may be more than she can take.

Over on the next block, we have the home of Eloise Thorne.  Eloise is an old lady by anyone's standards, but she lives alone and prefers it that way.  She just wants to be left alone with her collection of dolls.

And that house over there? It's rumored that anyone who tries to stay the night ends up dead.

Nothing's really normal in Tanglewood, and some people prefer things that way.  Others, like the Black Rose Society, will do anything it takes to make sure what happens in Tanglewood stays there.

6.) What is your favorite character to write and why?

I have to admit, I like writing bad people sometimes.

To that end, one of my favorites has been Samuel.  He's a demonic entity who was one of the major players in my book, "Penitence."

He's secretive, logical and absolutely detestable by anyone's morality, but he also does everything to help his people.  Everything he does has that goal in mind.

I think every villain has a side most people ignore, and I, personally, love to explore that side, to make them as deep as they can be.  I want my readers to sympathize with them, even when they feel they have to hate them.

Samuel was a good chance for me to play with that aspect of writing.

Thank you so much for the questions.  I hope that everyone has the best year they've ever had and that all of their dreams come to fruition.

If you want to check out my stories, you can find them on my website Website.  At that site, as well, you will also find writing tips, writing prompts, and other aspects designed to aid new and old writers find new ways to explore their own craft.

And thank you, Alyssa, for the opportunity to share myself.

Alex Laymen

Alex Laymen is a master of the micronovel. Twisting littles tales in short, potent blurbs that entice the reader and leave them dazzled.

Today we're lucky enough to have a moment of his time for a quick little interview!

How long have you been a writer?

I have been writing since the age of fourteen.

What got you into writing?

I actually decided to start writing after I picked up my first book by Stephen King. It was his book that was titled, Cujo.

What’s your favorite genre of writing?

I think very highly of my idol. I’m going to say my favorite genre has to be horror.

Do you have any work already published? If not do you want to include a snippet of what you’re currently working on?

I have yet to be published, and I would love to share.

“Mother continuously preached to me about how he would return with food, it was a straight up mess of tangled lies and utter nonsense. He was not coming back and I knew that, but she continued to believe the man with the drink in his hand. Food was the only thing on my mind while I watched her plea for her life, it was an awful time watching her squirm as I peeled back her flesh.”

What’s your WIP about?

Put yourself in the shoes of a person that can’t recall a time that they were normal. My latest piece follows a set of characters, each plagued by their own poison. This story is based off of the stories of sin, which you can listen to on my Facebook page.

Who is your favorite character to write so far? And why?

This is a tough question. I would have to say my favorite character has to be, Wren Black. She is a character that I role play as on a site that I am a part of.

Alex was even kind enough to not just provide us with a link to his personal author's page, but to his role-playing site for those who are interested in tangling with this madman.

I don't know about you, but I got chills reading that last sentence from his snippet!

Lovers of horror, sin and all the vices in the world wrapped tightly up in a concise little bow be sure to check out his author's page here.
